2024-2025 SHF Francophone Studies Stipend

The AATF & SHF National Council are pleased to offer Francophone Studies stipends which focus on interculturality. The purpose of these stipends is to support students’ interest in their continued learning of the French language and of francophone cultures. 

**The number and dollar amount of awards will be determined by the SHF Awards Committee.**

Guidelines for Application

  • The applicant must be a U.S. High School student and an inducted member (on National Inductee list) of the SHF by the application deadline of Wednesday, February 5th, 2025. 
  • The teacher of the student applicant must have current 2025 AATF membership by Wednesday, February 5th, 2025.
  • Each SHF charter may submit up to two applications.
  • Awards must be used to support the continued study of French (in person or online). 

    Essay (150-250 words in French)

    Essay Topic: The aim of the Société Honoraire de Français is “to stimulate interest in the study of the French language and Francophone cultures, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, and to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all learners.  We aim to create enthusiasm for and a deep understanding of the diverse francophone world, encourage cultural exchange, and promote national and international friendship and collaboration” State in French how you believe that your award will support these goals and your reasons for applying. Please relate these goals directly to your proposed use of the stipend. You must present your own ideas, but a teacher may correct grammar.

    Do not include any personal information (name, school attending, etc.) within the text of the essay.

    Only applications which are complete will be reviewed.

    The following information will be entered on the submission form:

    • Teacher name (first & last) and email, student name (first & last), school name and physical mailing address
    • Student information – grade, level of French course currently enrolled in, SHF participation, other extra-curricular activities (sports, clubs, volunteer efforts, part-time employment), Grand Concours participation, and history of travel to a French speaking country
    • Student essay of 150-250 words in French
    • Copy of study program prospectus (or justification) 
    • Letter of recommendation from current French teacher.
    • Letter of recommendation from teacher or faculty member of a non-French discipline employed at the school the applicant is currently attending.
    • Scanned copy of high school transcript through first semester of 2024-2025 school year.

    • Submitting teacher is listed as SHF sponsor or co-sponsor of school SHF Charter. 
      • Not sure of SHF Charter status or listed SHF sponsor? Please check the SHF DIRECTORY HERE.
    • Submitting teacher/SHF sponsor has current AATF membership.
      • Not sure of membership status? After logging in to frenchteachers.org, please click on 'Member Compass' to see when membership expires/expired.
    • Student is an inducted member of SHF ($4 Induction Fee was paid to AATF when student was inducted).
