Professional Bio

Katy Wheelock has served as a French educator for over 25 years and international trainer in Senegal and throughout francophone Africa. Currently, Katy teaches high school French, is the World Languages Chair for the 8 modern languages taught in her school, is a Vice-President for the American Association of Teachers of French at the national level, serves as VP for her local AATF Northern Virginia / DC chapter, and leads French immersion cultural, educational, and professional experiences in Senegal for teachers of French and student groups.

In 1997, Katy won a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal. She studied African Civilizations and African Literature. For the next two years, she also worked for the International Organization for Migration, various language programs, and at a Senegalese homeless children’s shelter.

Through her professional work later doing training with the African Union as well as student and family trips, she returned to Senegal nearly 10 other times for 1-2 weeks per trip. Katy seeks to share her love and knowledge of Senegal through specially-tailored workshops, presentations, sharing of resources, and travel for French language educators and their students.
